En 1975, Blackmoore rompe definitivamente con Deep Purple al no querer sus compañeros grabar el tema “Black Seep of the Fmily”, un tema de Quatermas. Tras éste incidente el huraño e introvertido guitarrista dejó definitivamente el grupo que lo había hecho famoso e inicia su carrera en solitario. Para ello se une con el grupo Elf, con su cantante Ronnie James Dio al frente, formando con ellos el grupo Richie Blackmoores Rainbow, cuyo nombre será el título de su primer disco.Este disco dará rienda suelta al amor de Blackmoore por la música medieval y la magia, todo ello reflejado en las letras de las canciones. El disco se abre con el tema “Man on the silver mountain”, tema que con el tiempo se convertiría en todo un clásico del Hard Rock de los años 70, con una soberbia interpretación a la guitarra de Blackmoore. También hallamos la canción que le hizo dejar Deep Purple.
La voz de Dio, alcanza en esta obra unos agudos increíbles y nos hace descubrir uno de los mejores cantantes de la historia del heavy. Además de que podemos oír a Blackmooore por primera vez interpretando baladas como la bellísima y dulce “Catch the Raibow”, una canción que nos habla de esperanza, y es cantada magistralmente por Dio.
El Hard Rock más intenso lo interpretan con el tema “Snake Charmer” con el que se adentra en el mundo de la magia. El siguiente corte del disco es posiblemente el mejor tema del álbum, donde Blackmoore nos sorprende tocando con una maestría absoluta la guitarra acústica, en el tema “The temple of the king” y la voz de Dio nos traslada al mundo medieval y nos habla de magos, reyes y dragones. Éste se convertiría en un verdadero clásico de la banda y sería versionado por multitud de grupos, entre ellos los españoles Mago de Oz.

Los siguientes tres temas son un marchoso rockabillie titulado “If you don’t laike rock’n’roll”, la versión del clásico tema medieval “Sixteenth century green sleeves” donde nuevamente se refleja el amor de Blakmoore por el mundo medieval y una versión de tema “Still i’n sad” con la que se cierra el disco.
En general este primer trabajo de Raimbow es un magnifico disco en el que Blackmoore demuestra su gran calidad como compositor y guitarrista y nos permite descubrir el gran cantante que es Dio.
El disco fue producido por el propio Richie, Dio y Martin Birch, un productor que años más tarde trabajaría con grupos como Iron Maiden.
En sus orígenes el disco sólo se público en Alemania, pero debido a su éxito se publicaría ese mismo año en el resto del mundo. Llegando a alcanzar el puesto número 11 en las lista inglesas en agosto del 1975 y el número 30 de las listas americanas en el mismo año.
A pesar del éxito y las buenas críticas al año siguiente Blackmoore cambiaría l formación del grupo dejando sólo a Dio, los nuevos miembros serian Jimie Bain, al bajo; Tony Carey, a los teclados y el famoso Cozy Powell a la batería. Con ellos Rainbow alcanzaría la categoría de súper grupo.
